Default Thin Metallic Noise at 3k RPMs

Hi guys, I own 2000 Mustang GT that just hit 80K miles, the car has a manual transmission. When im driving the car in 1st-3rd gear and 3,000 rpms the car makes a thin metallic noise coming from right underneath the middle of the car. The car only makes the noise at 3,000 rpms and as soon as i pass over or under that the sound goes away. So it only lasts for like a split second but it is very noticeable and quite annoying. It doesn't matter if the car is warm or hot it still manages to make the noise. In 4th-5th gear there is no noise and in neutral if I rev the engine to 3k RPMs it doesn't make the noise either. Does anyone know what could be happening?
Thanks in advanced!

Sounds to me like a vibration probably from some part of the exhaust against the under body. Do you have an after market intake?

Hmm okay, that's also what I was thinking but the main thing that confuses me is that you can't hear any rattle when I rev the car in neutral, I don't know much about cars so im not to sure if that matters. And Yes I do have an aftermarket intake, im pretty sure its a BBK

I'm thinking that tomorrow ill take my mustang to my local muffler shop here and see if they can make sure that the exhaust is tight and secure and hopefully that will put an end to the noise.

Its not strange that you can't reproduce the noise when you just rev it because its not under any load.

I think its your intake though... I also have a BBK and had the same problem. The neck at the filter end is resting on the metal plate that is up against the fender wall.

Try and put some cardboard all around where the two meet and if that works you can work on a more permanent solution.

Driveline or exhaust vibration, check the driveshaft u joints, and rubber exhaust mounts.

Have you tried installing an aluminum driveshaft? Try http://www.americanmuscle.com/driveshaft.html

For what it's worth I had a similiar noise in my 97 Cobra. It was very noticeable when going slower under load like up a hill. I replaced the clutch a few months back and the noise is gone. We looked at the old clutch and could not see anything wrong. All I know is the noise is gone!!
