Brake Diagnosis
Somewhat of a newbie question that someone may be able to answer. I have a 2001 Mustang GT that lunges back and forth when I'm braking and coming to a complete stop. Also when slowing down at high speeds the steering wheel shakes. I've read that if it lunges back and forth then it's a rear brake issue, and if the wheel shakes then it's a front brake issue. The question is what exactly needs to be replaced when they say this? Is it just the brake pads? Or the rotors?
There is NO sound whatsoever when braking, no squealing or grinding which is why I ruled out the brake pads. With all this information I am thinking the brake rotors need to be replaced. The shops have told me they will charge mt $50-60 to diagnose the problem, and since I have to pay for school I'm trying to save as much as I can before I get carried away spending money on parts. :D |
sounds like warped rotors to me, not hard to do your self. Take off find a shop that turns rotors and put back on see if that solves problem.

Definitely rotors, most likely front rotors. These days it seems it costs as much to have them turned as it does to get new ones tbh. Make sure you get new pads as well, should get new ones while your there workin anyway.
|
Ya definitely the rotors like they said. I had the same problem with my car, and it's a bitch.

Thanks guys, and I had put powerslot slotted rotors on my 2000 but noticed these new 'hawk quiet slot rotors'. Anyone heard anything good or bad about them?

Good Brake Fluid and brainded steel lines are gonna be far more benifical to you compared to what you use for rotors especially for a mustang thats DD (in just inferring that your's mainly is a DD). I've justed always used OE motorcraft rotors a) cheap b) qualty is pretty good. Because without top notch brake fluid & steel lines "slotted" your not going see any improvement over blanks under normal driving conditions.

I didn't know the OE standard brake rotors would be so cheap! However I'm shopping online for some and can only find Wearever brand rotors. Anyone got opinions on this brand? They're cheap, and they make a lot of "OE" replacement parts. But I want to make sure they have good durability.
