that's a shocker did you read something that hinted that could be the issue at hand?

I checked the fuses under the hood and then after researching realized there were fuses underneath the dash. I went a bought a new VSS and before I jacked the car up and got dirty I wanted to check the fuses since there were like 3 or 4 that had to do with the instrument cluster. Turns out the cigarette lighter fuse was blown and replaced it and took it for a drive. Everything worked like it should, have to return the VSS now.

That is very odd, as the cigar lighter fuse shows in the wiring diagrams as a dedicated feed just to the lighter socket--has there been some sort of aftermarket "something" added or has the wiring been mucked about with?

Is there a Dallas Speed-Cal or similar device installed? Perhaps the installer tapped the cigar lighter circuit for its power?

Have you had it since it was new? It just doesn't make sense the the lighter fuse would kill the speedometer/odometer--unless there is a Speed-Cal or something like it being powered from the lighter circuit. Have you ever had the shifter bezel off, that's where the Speed=Cal is usually installed.

I bought it used with 86,000 miles. As far as I know everything is stock on it. Talked to the guy that traded it in and he left it stock except for the chin spoiler. He got it with 28,000 miles. The first owner could have put something on it but to my knowing everything is stock.

What does a speed cal do?

What RPM does the engine spin at 60 (or 70 or 80) in 5th gear?

And while you are at it, does the speedo seem to be reading correctly?

It was less than 2000 rpm at 70, and the speedo seems fine. I will check again at 70 when I drive it again.
