Default 2003 mach 1 compression poundage?

hello mustangers,

im a previous owner of a 2003 gt which i loved. sold it but am now back in the market for a mach 1 of the 2003-04 flavor. i found one locally that i am going to look at. i wanted to get the stock compression poundage ratings, so i can accurately perform a compression test on the car before i go through with purchase. please help.

thank you

Ford does not publish compression specs, except to say that the lowest reading should be no less than 75% of the highest and to imply 135 psi is the service limit.

I would expect to see at least 175 to 190+ on an engine in good shape. Make sure you run the engine to full operating temp, then pull all eight plugs and block the throttle open.

If one or more are very low you could do a wet test to determine if it's rings or valves, however since you are just thinking about buying the car it may not matter top you what the problem is--could be a heck of a bargaining point though...

If the compression looks good, and is consistent across the board (I.e. each cylinder within +/-5% or so) then I would not bother with a leak down test, as it would undoubtedly pass.

How many miles on the car?

31k miles. dealership said "an old man owned it, it was their spare car, so im pretty sure he wasnt racing around." i came right back with "yeah and the guy could have been a hobby race car driver in his past and had a need for speed, he didnt buy the car to see how slow it could go." with that said, the car is in good shape for its age, completely stock which i like. none of the fluids were gummy, or milky. it handles well, and felt peppy. starts well, and idles smoothly. im sure it will check out. im just trying to be as smart about it as possible.

I wouldn't even bother with a compression test if it starts quickly, idles well when cold, and doesn't smoke hot or cold. I bought my '03 GT in 12/2006 with 30k after a 1/2 mile ride around the subdivision...
