3.90 gears...which brand?
#12
I had a different GT earlier this year. Full exhaust, 3800 stall, 4.10s, full suspension. I would have run out of gear earlier than I'd like. The few hundred RPMs extra I'd get from 3.90s would have been nice plus I'm 99.9% sure I wouldn't have noticed the difference between the two.

I am running MOTIVE 3.90(actually 3.91's) in my car and have no issues.
The quality of MOTIVE gears are just fine, so don't shy away from 3.90 because of that. In fact, I had to go with 3.90 since 4.10 would turn too many rpm in the 1/4, and 3.73 just didn't come out of the hole like the steeper gears.
I wouldn't let mpg sway me from 4.10 to 3.90, but with a manual trans the 4.10 just runs thru gears so quickly in town (leaving traffic lights, etc). IMHO, 3.90 are a real good compromise ratio for a DD car that gets some passes at the track.
GOOD LUCK!

CRASH,
I went from 4.10 to 3.73, and then to 3.90 all in about 4 months. I know the relative difference in feel between all of those gears with no other mods. Obviously, the 4.10s give the most pull but run out quicker. After 4.10s, the 3.73s felt a little slow out of the hole and 2nd and 3rd didn't have the same feel either. There was a noticeable improvement from 3.73 to 3.90, but it wasn't quite as strong as the 4.10s. For a DD that gets a few passes at the track, I highly recommend the 3.90 gear. If maximum ET is the goal, and you won't run out of rpm, 4.10 is absolutely the way to go.
I don't think you would be disappointed with an upgrade to 3.90 from 3.73 if you like to make some passes with the car. For what it is worth... the ratio is actually 3.91:1 (which puts it numerically right between 3.73 and 4.10). Not that it makes any difference, but I don't know why they are listed as 3.90???

Ya he's not auto. It's tough talking to people with gears who aren't auto. Autos need gearing bad and I don't think manual gearing is the same as auto gearing.
Rygi, have you thought about running 4.10s and a 27" tire to be able to squeeze out a few more MPH at the track? Thinking back on it and how 4.10s add just a few hundred more RPM I'd probably keep them and run a taller tire. 4.10s and a stall made for a fun car.

Btw, here's the gear calculator I use. It's very helpful, if the link works.
