A short throw shifter is a shifter that has...well, a shorter throw. Bassicly, the distance from nuutral position to an in gear position is shorter. You will have faster, shorter shifts with one. I have tried Hurst and Steeda shifters. The steeda was shorter then the hurst, but I like the Hurst better.

A short throw shifter is exactally what it says it is. Steeda makes one called the tri-ax and everyone seems to like it. It shortens your shift so you change gears faster. I believe they run about $150.

Congrats on the car. I cant say too much about the you need to be careful in that kinda car only being 16, cuz i got mine when i was 17. But im 19 now and in college, so all i can say is be careful! If you are wanting some ideas for mods, check out the sticky at the top of the 4.6 page. "basic mods for your 96-04 GT". It will be very helpful. Gears, gears, gears. Look into it. With rims, I couldnt ever go with anything but chrome, but thats just me. As for the LS1 F-birds and Camaros, You are going to be inferior to them regaurdless. Just face it, they are faster. Once you get a little driving under your belt, you may be able to out drive and auto at the 1/8 mile track. Ive done it quite a few times, but look at all the mods ive done to my car. I KNOW for a fact they are still faster than me. Good luck, and go to the track to do your racing!

IF you want the best bang for your buck get gears. they increase acceleration by a ton and they are not too expensive. this is the first thing you want to do if are willing to sacrifice gas mileage a little. Don't waste your time with a cold air intake yet. There are really only two ratios out there that you want. 3.73 or 4.10 The 3.10 is more for still getting good gas mileage and still have decent acceleration gains. If You are hardly ever on the highway just go ahead with 4.10's
Enjoy your car and don't kill yourself.

^Umm, we were trying to get him weaned off of going really fast just yet; he's only 16 and needs to learn his limits before those of his car.

Anyway, unless Ma & Pa are loaded and willing to spend, we need to steer him towards the inexpensive stuff. Not cheap, inexpensive.

Plus, we need to take into account his level of experience/comfort for installing any items we recommend.

So, after you read our recommendations, SEARCH the Internet. Look at lots of sites and don't forget good old Ebay. For example, I bought my Tri-Ax shifter (new) for $130 shipped and my pulleys (used) for $95. Before you bid or buy, come back and ask us about quality and price. Most of are more than willing to help you.

You usually get what you pay for. Don't buy MAC.

i would do the cold air intake, underdrive pulley, gears, headers, exhaust, and if you wanted to smoke them in a race get nos. If you wanna spend more cylinder heads, intake, injectors, cams, and ignition mods.
