Thankfully my car is safe as everyone around here likes to get 80's models sedans and put giant rims on em. New Edges are not on thieves radars.

Of course, having Russian mob living in the apt next door probably doesn't hurt either.

Ok, so the work got held up as it was a little difficult getting a hold of the #$^@ nuts, as no place had em. I finally got some from a local Auto Zone, but they don't seem like the one time use style. These are a solid metal nut, without the retainer around it. I don't know what the retainer around the Ford nut does. The aftermarket should work as long as it is torqued to specs I am guessing?

Pic of nut:

I would not use them without a retainer, but that's just me--if I did I would use red Loctite on 'em...

Dumb question #457:

What exactly does the retainer do? Obviously it retains the nut somehow, but how?

Sorry for the questions, just trying to figure this out!

Red loctite is a darn good idea. Might have to give that a go if the local Ford Dealer doesn't have the right nuts

Thats a swaged lock nut you have in your hand. It will work just fine. Look real close at it.

It's a "just in case" sort of thing, I.e. just in case the nut comes loose (which is not really likely as tight as the sucka' is torqued) it will not come off--with the wheel right behind it.

I just looked again at the photo you posted, the nut appears to be upset inward at 2:00 and 8:00--if so this would provide the same retaining characteristics as the stock nuts...

Retainers,pshhhhh..... Loctite pshhhhhhh........ Just do what the local chevy bad boy mechanic of the area does for spindle nuts and just mix up some jb quick weld and throw it on there. (yes he really does this). Haha honestly if u can get a retained do as cliff said and use some thread locker.
