1998 v6, car shut off while in 3rd gear

1998 v6, car shut off while in 3rd gear
No idea what happened but now I'm worried about even driving the vehicle.
I was in 3rd gear, everything was fine driving down the road and then there is a big sound and the engine shuts off and the tires come to a screeching halt.
I then turned the car back on and shifted into 1st and the car is making a weird noise but I could drive it just fine again. I was really close to home, fortunately.
What could this be?

"Weird noise" doesn't really give us much to go on?
Describe the noise and where it might coming from--even the broadest terms would help. Is this a 5-speed or a slushbox--I am assuming "shifted into 1st" means it's a manual, but it would be good to know for sure.
Have you checked under to hood to make sure the belt (belts on a 6-banger?) are in place, wiring looks OK, battery connections clean and tight?
