Default idle at 1600 rpm

hello so i have been having a problem with my idle at first it was jumping when i was at a dead stop it would jump from around 15oo rpm to as low as 300. i then replaced the iac in hopes of this fixing the problem but instead it created a new one now my rpms in neutral will sit at 2000 rpms and while driving the car will accelerate with out me giving it gas. has anyone else experienced this problem and if so what was the solution. thanx

maybe the throttle cable is hung somewhere? or maybe a vacuum leak? thats the only things I would think to cause that

Did you disconnect the battery for 5-7 minutes while swapping out the IAC? If not them do so, this will reset the KAM (Keep Alive Memory) and force the PCM to relearn the idle air trims.

You can test the IAC as follows:
  • With the engine warm and idling (after you have reset the KAM) disconnect the IAC electrical connector, the engine rpm should drop significantly or even stall--if it doesn't the IAC is bad buy a new one;

  • The IAC's electrical status can be tested with a multi-meter. Unplug the electrical connector and measure the resistance between the two terminals, it should be 6Ω to 13Ω--if it isn't the IAC is bad, buy a new one;

  • Next check the resistance between each terminal and the IAC body, in both cases it should be better than 10kΩ--if it is less that IAC is bad, buy a new one;

  • Check the voltage between the red wire at the IAC (connector plugged in, key on engine off (KOEO) and ground (the IAC body will work), it should be 12.0V or more--if not you have a wiring problem.

You have an automatic I am guessing, do you mean that the engine speed rises on its own, or the vehicle accelerates while the engine speed remains the same?

If the latter, what speed (rpm) does the engine turn while the car is accelerating?

Does it continue to rise, or level off at some point?

intial start up the car will rev up to about 2200 and slowly come down to about 1200 once i put it in drive or reverse the idle will then return to about 600 rpm. while driving the car will accelerate to about 15 mph with out me pressing the gas it will even shift to second gear. now if im going lets say 40 mph i do not have to hold the gas to keep speed its like there is no engine break at all. if i throw it into nuetral while driving the rpms will rise about 500 rpms more. braking is a real bit$$ and seems like the transmission is having a hard time down shifting

I really think its the throttle cable hung up or out of adjustment somewhere, that's what it sounds like to me, try lifting up on the gas pedal and seeing if it quits
