New to forums, 96 GT suspension/drivetrain issues.
Hey guys, I recently traded for a 96 GT with 140k miles. I was told it had PI heads and intake off of a 2000 GT (which I believe is not true), it does have a full MagnaFlow exhaust, BBK rear control arm set up, lowering kit and cold air intake. Also has 373 gears.
Now to my issues: When accelerating I can hear a whining sound, seems like its coming from right underneath me, but sometimes sounds like its coming from the rear. As soon as I let off the gas it stops, but if I'm going over 60mph when I let off the gas I hear a kinda grinding sound (like when u run over a rumble strip on the side of the highway). It only does it for a couple seconds then quits. I know putting gears in can be tricky, so I'm thinking they didn't get it quite right. What do you guys think? Any input would be helpful.

Does the car have stock gears in the rear end? The rumple strip feeling is driveline vibration which could be a number o things, bad u joint, tranny mount, aftermarket gears, worn suspension components. The whine could be the trans or the rear, ensure proper fluid level in the trans.

Yeah, the whine is coming from the rear, i put the back seats down and can hear it very well. Pretty sure thats what it is, I've heard there's some special tool you have to have to get the gears in straight. Any ideas on how to correct this?
As for the other sound, its not coming from as far back as the whine. It also does it when I let off the gas at high speeds even if I hold in the clutch or put it in nuetral. As soon as the speed drops it quits, or quiets down a lot, I think i can still hear it at low speeds sometimes but barely.

the howling or whining noise def sounds like rear dif problem, may just be bearing if no teeth on the ring and pinion are bad and no metal shavings. i put 373s in mine because i thought the gears were bad, cause of a howling noise under acceleration. found out it was just a pinion bearing so it might be that????
