Stock gear ratio in the rear for the 96-98 is 2.73. (3.27 was optional that year). if you go with 4.10's expect a decent increase in pull from the line but also expect a decrease in MPG but that shouldnt matter because after all, its a mustang...
Youre going to also need a tune if you go this route in order to adjust the cars computer and tune the shift points, i recommend a bama tune.

Also, im not sure if the 06 gears would fit (i dont see how they could), but i would go the safe route and buy a new gear kit. http://www.americanmuscle.com/fopege4ra.html
Doing this you make sure youre putting quality parts in your car and wont harm anything. Only $159 (without tune). Hope this helps!

Pretty sure they will fit; both cars use an 8.8" rearend.

Actually, as the 98 speed sensor is gear driven a tuner WILL NOT correct the speedo, he will need a new drive and worm gear, or a Dallas Mustang Speed-cal (simplest)

Yes they will work.

Misunderstood you then, my mistake. Just didn't want him to think it would fix his speedo and then get disappointed when it doesn't.

Those gears will fit. Just make absolutely sure that there are no cracks, etc... in them. I also believe that used gears from a gear swap aren't the best idea...I'd recommend you buy new...unless they are selling for dirt cheap :)
