AF ratio and half hears?

AF ratio and half hears?
I think I might be running lean. I am starting to hear poping noises under certain rpms. as if its compressing just air or most air. like when your in 2nd gear and going fast down hill and you hear the bubbly exhaust notes. Ive been hearing them while cruising from time to time. I dont think its pre ignition detonation, 89 octane didnt change anything. but then again I dont what what pinging or knocking is supposed to sound like. I am hearing very faint and soft "puffs"
So is getting a hand held tuner the only possible way I can adjust the AF ratio on my own? My MAF sensor looks very clean.
as for half gears... Sometimes I will be going up hill in fourth gear and its starts to bog down on me so I turn Over Drive off and it kicks down into 3rd running say 3K rpms and then a moment later its like it shifts and goes right to 2.5K rpms. half shifts? catches something? has anyone else ever noticed this?

If you start to hear poping or crackling coming from your exaust n NOT your motor. Good chance your running lean. Especially if your accelerating n loosing power while hearing those sounds is running lean. As for the hand held tuner. I don't think you will be able to adjust the air:fuel ratio yourself. That's something I think your tuner will have to do.

You need to figure out why it started running lean out of no where. It could be your fuel filter getting clogged. Which could burn up your pump. Could be dirty injectors, or one of your sensors going out like the one on your fuel rail
