Default Transmission

My car has around 45000 miles on it and i was wanting to service the transmission. I have a five speed. This is the first time i have serviced a transmission befroe. And i was wondering how to as far as the best fluid to use, filter, and where do you drain and add the new fluid at. If anyone has tackled this before could you help me out on this. Thanks

You dont need to change fluid until 60000. But if you want, go ahead. There are 2 plugs on the side of trans. Very easy to find. Lower one for drain, upper one for fill. You need mercon fluid. Do not use mercon v. Mercon v is for automatics only. When filling, you need to fill 1/2 inch below fill plug, and no filter to change.

I just put Mobile 1 in mine, the synthetic gear oil. I'm sure Royal Purple, Redline or Amsoil are all just as good if not better.

I notice its shifting into gears lot little smoother.

My car has over 80K miles though and I'm sure its never been changed.

I used something called a "suction gun" which I purchased from autozone for around $8 to get the fluid in.

Best bet is to drain the fluid from the lower plug when the car is HOT. then wait until it cools down to fill.

I got under my car to look for the drain and fill plugs today. I saw the one for the drain because it had drain beside it but i didnt see the fill plug is it on the driver or pass side of the car. When i go to get the fluid will it just need to say mercon tranny fluid on the bottle. thanks

The fill plug is on the same side. Right at the top/side of trans. Looks just like the drain plug. When getting the fluid, just tell them what kind of car or mercon. Doesnt really matter. You will need 3.7L to fill mark.
