Default 4.6 to 5.4 Swap

Im thinking about doing a 5.4 swap next year. I read some forums & it seems fairly doable. Im estimating around $2000 & thats including the HPS intake manifold & a good used 5.4 2V SOHC Longblock. Im only interested in the 2V engine because I think that would be the easiest to find & fit on my car.

Would it be worth to swap a 5.4 2V engine on my Mustang GT? Can anyone post 5.4 Swap Dyno results & their mods? Quarter mile times?

Would it be better to swap a 4.6 4V from a Mark VIII?

For a $2000 budget, I would just do a Mark VIII swap. More simple and direct, and you'll probably have better gains in the long run.

The 5.4 makes a bit more torque than either 4.6l, but the 5.4 (2v) makes peak power around 5K. Bottom line is 2v heads flow pretty poorly, even heavily ported.....the 4v heads outflow ported 2v heads all day.

If you are looking for the torque and slight displacement advantage of the 5.4, and want to make peak power higher than 5K you could do a 5.4 4V swap....which gets more complicated as your choice of intakes is severly narrowed.

Overall I would say go with a 97-98 mark viii engine (complete of course), you can't really go wrong with a 4V.....butttttttttt I could be a tiny bit biased.

Default 5.4 on a budget

You can do this swap on a budget and it will make a noticeable seat of the pants difference, but if you are looking for dyno bragging rights, you will need to spend more money or look elsewhere. The 5.4 2v with the HPS intake might net you 15 HP over a 4.6 PI - but about 50 more ft lbs. of torque below 3500 RPM - where you will feel it on the street.

If you are looking for more on a budget, the 4v swap will be harder, but will give you more horsepower. The 2v will look stock, but will need TFS or heavily ported factory heads to make serious power. With Stage III factory heads and custom (Bullet or CMS) cams (and HPS intake), you can expect something in the mid 300s for horsepower. With TFS heads, you'll be pushing close to 400 (N/A).

If you have a hard $2000.00 limit, I would look for a low-mileage 4v 4.6 or throw ported heads and cams at the 2v 4.6.

I should add that I am in the middle of a 5.4 2v swap myself and to do it right, you'll need to spend more like $4k to $6k. Figure $800.00 for the intake, $1200.00 - $2000.00 for heads / head work, and $600.00 for cams. You can run the stock bottom end for awhile, if you keep it under 6000 RPM, but I would at least do a rod and piston swap while you have the motor out (figure another at least another 1000.00 for pistons, bearings and cheap h-beams, plus a couple hundred more for machine work / balancing). You'll also need bigger injectors (if they don't come with the motor) and an upgraded fuel pump and a tune or tuning software and a wideband O2 sensor.

For $2000.00 you can find a used motor, throw the intake at it and have your muffler shop widen and lengthen your h-pipe. You can probably get by with the factory fuel pump and you will definitely notice the extra torque, but the motor won't make any more over 4000 RPM than a 4.6 2v would. Without spending a few hundred more for at least cams, fuel upgrades and a tune, I think you may be disappointed in the results.

That said, I think the 5.4 can be a very good street / strip motor, if you are willing to lay out for heads, cams and a forged bottom end. The long stroke really flattens out the torque curve and there are a few builds out there making 300+ ft lbs from under 2000 to over 6000 RPM.

The only 2v 5.4 swap I'd do would be a L swap. Which is exactly what I'll be doing for my little brother next year while he's deployed.

skip the 5.4 swap, youre adding extra unwanted weight and not gaining much hp or torque. the 93-98 mark viii can be done cheap. i have personally bought 2 mark engines for 250 a peice and heard them run before pulled. you can use the 97-98 mark intake manifold or the 96-98 cobra one.also use the 96-98 cobra cold air intake. reuse your gt oilpan and buy a set of 96-04 cobra manifolds, they will bolt to your existing mid pipe. if you buy the engine oil pan to intake, you should need but a few odd ends to finish up. i have seen a couple people use the factory gt tune but i suggest to get it dyno tuned. or you can add $500 to that 2000 and do the $1500 vortech build

I guess the 4.6 4v swap from a Mark VIII is the way to go on these mustangs. Does anyone have any Dyno results from a Mustang with a stock 4.6 4V swap. I see Mark VIIIs in the junkyards a lot.
