Question New Transmission...

I am in need of a new transmission for my 96 GT. It's an automatic.. Im wondering how hard it would be to put a manual transmission in, or if it would be easier to just replace it with another automatic transmission. And how hard would it be for me and a couple wingmen to replace it with proper tools? Considering the shop on base has all we need, we have no shortage of tools. Please help?!

Serving Proudly from Dyess AFB, Texas.

Well, A direct replacement is easier by far, but there have been brave souls that have done a manual conversion. I have not done one myself, but there is a pretty sizeable parts list. Ypu and you buddies should be able to do a direct swap no prob...I assume the base shop has a lift, Offutt AFB does, I imagine Dyess is the same?

And One more thing...Thanks for your service!

I paid about 900 for an expert rebuild, and did the install, with my buds. Not to bad..

Whoah whoah whoah, conversion is a whole other animal. That is not as much of a piece of cake, that takes some knowledge and time, and even then can still have problems.

Swithing to manual is easy as long as you have the parts, trans, clutch, fylwheel, clutch cable, clutch quadrant, pedal assembly, etc. The motor swap is just as easy as long as you have ALL the parts needed and a tune.

Anything sounds easy in theory but I've even known professionals who have had a hard time.. Doing a Cobra drivetrain conversion takes a lot of time and patience and knowledge of the car in and out. And even with a ECU and tune it can still run terrible or not run at all after completion because of wiring... Not saying it's the most difficult thing in the world but definitely not for a rookie to tackle.. if you got the skills and tools and time, go for it to save a few dollars. If not, just sell the GT and buy a Cobra.
