My opinion--FWIW--buy the AZ unit, get it now, and have a lifetime warranty to boot...

Replaced the alternator, and so far no CEL (been about 5 or 6 drive cycles since rehooking the battery).
I must have been given some bad info on that AC Voltage bit... just for my edumacation, I did the same thing with the new alternator and it is reading about 30Vac also. (or maybe my meter is messed up?). But no CEL, so I will go with that.

A lot of multimeters get messed up reading fast AC waveforms, as I said I have never used one to monitor generator output just 'scopes. IF I get a chance I'll check a couple of my meters out on my car...
