What does your car feel like when you have a bad Coil on Plug? Is it intermittant?

Shimmys, feels like its gonna vibrate itself to death under power.
Codes? Any auto parts outlet will hook it up for free.

A bad coil can produce many different symptoms. Most common is a misfire, usually accompanied by a CEL. Another is a slight miss under load. The list goes on.

I have this intermittent shutter, misfire, hesitation that comes along and lasts for about 5 seconds then goes away. As soon as it clears up the car surges with power. I changed the plugs. That didn't seem to make any difference The only codes that I get when I scan is for O2 Sensors, which I don't have catalytic converters so I attribute it to that.

What codes are you getting?

A bad COP will cause a misfire consistent with certain engine speed and load conditions, if it is not behaving like that then it is not a bad COP. They can be easily tested with an adjustable air gap tester, any COP that can fire across a 1/2" air gap is OK...

My 99 was doing that and several COPS were bad.

Note that none of these have anything to do with the ignition system.

The hot links above attach to the possible causes and diagnostic tips for the indicated code, from the shop manual. I'd checkout the FRP sensor first...

Cliffy

I put new MSD COPs on the car after work. The car drove lie a dream all night no problems no studdering. Saturday morning, I take the stang out and the studdering starts all over. How do I check the fuel rail problem? P0190?

Have you checked the spark plugs?

Please Mike, believe me, I am not targeting you with the following tirade.

As to the FRP, we are getting into why I no longer publish pinpoint test procedures. Here is that procedure from the shop manual.

As you can see it first involves a certain background knowledge of the overall engine control system, and includes numerous links to other sections of the shop manual. And the truth is I no longer care to continue to provide layman's language interpretations of these documents, and fully linked conversions of same--taking 30 to 45 minutes of my time--when all anyone has to do is buy the full 2000 through 2003 official Ford shop manual on dual layer DVD for a stinking $15 (my former price, though they are available on eBay in that range).

I have offered this DVD in the classifieds a number of times, on a number of forums, and had only marginal if any response, I.e. not enough to make it even close to "my bother". In addition the few real buyers I have been accused of "ripping people off because all I need to do is burn a DVD and mail it", and of not providing support for Windows 7 and 8--when in 2003 Win 7 and 8 were just a wet spot in Bill Gate's underpants.

For years I have told people that I am a remarkably reasonable person, that being up until it gets through my thick head that I am not being treated reasonably--then I can be the most unreasonable SOB anyone has ever dealt with--and getting me back over the line may well be impossible.

Mike, once again please understand that all you did was open this door--none of this is directed at you (PM me if you'd like a copy of the DVD)...
