Coolant Issues.

When you stop at a light and notice the temp gauge start to rise, do you also hear the cooling fan kick on? If not, then your problem is with the fan not your cooling system. While coolant does flow through the motor while it is running, the radiator requires air passing over its fins to cool the coolant. That is what the fan is for when your at a stop.

With that said, you may have a separate issue causing the white puffs of smoke.
