You can get a midpipe that has cats for longtubes. Its still hard to pass emissions with those even. Depends on whether or not where you live cares about emissions. To answer your question though yes you can leave em out. You need a tuner or MIL eliminators to get rid of the Check Engine Light.

to answer the original question, the car does not need cats to run properly, providing you have the MIL eliminators on the rear 02 sensors or a tuner to turn them off.
Mother nature or your local government might care.....depends on your local rules for emissions, etc.

10K dollar fine in Florida for removing a factory cat without replaceing it.... A lot of shops won't do it. Mine told me "If a cop asks you, you did it! If a friend asks, I helped ya out
