I am a complete newbie to this type of work.
You would be able to do it by yourself if you; have a dial indicator/mag base, and have the transmission seperated.

Find a solid place to mount a mag base preferably onto the housing of the transmission. set the dial indicator perpendicular to the shaft and rotate it all the way around watching the dial. your looking for any movement on the dial indicating a bent shaft. you will want to use the smooth shaft as you will have a hard time reading off the splines
