vibration with new gears?
Hey there,
I just got the 373 gear kit from American Muscle. I talked to a local shop about installing them, he seems to think there may be some issue with driveshaft vibration. Has anybody else had this issue on a New Edge?

If a mechanic were to tell me that there may be a problem before installing a mod (especially gears) I would not let him touch my car. Ton's of guys on here have 373's, 410's and have no problem.. How much is he charging you and what brand of gears did you go with?

Very common with 4.10 and 4.30 gears haven't heard it so much with 3.73's. Most people cure vibration with Aluminum driveshaft.
I put 4.30's and had a terrible vibration at 80 put in Aluminum D/S and no vibration at all anymore

With 3.73 gears, and for any given road speed, the driveshaft is turning 11.4% faster than with the stock 3.27 gears. In 4th gear at 80 mph this would be 4000 rpm with the 3.73s versus 3500 rpm with the 3.27s--500 rpm faster. Spinning the driveshaft faster can exacerbate imbalances and/or create sympathetic vibrations that were not previously apparent.
This can worsen if the driveshaft was not remounted to the rear end drive flange is the same relative position as before it was dropped to change out the gears.

I had a hard time deciding on which shop to have install my Ford Racing 4.10 gears (just a couple of months ago). Talked with people at a few shops --- wound up going with the guy at a local dealership (because he had the most experience and knowledge).
It was a bit expensive, but the job was done to my FULL SATISFACTION. No vibration and no "gear whine". Runs just as smooth and quiet as the factory installed 3.27 gears. I quickly forgot about the extra $$ for the install.
