Default Throttle Position Sensor help please.

Hey there guys I have a 04 mustang gt that the tps went out on it the other day and so I went on and bought a new one and put everything on there but tps is still popping up on the code. My question is I have read a lot up on this and everything I have read say to have the key turned to the on position but not to actually start the car. Well I have done that and I tapped the middle wire of the tps and I had it set at .98 do you have to have WOT and have that voltage set under 1 volt or without WOT I'm confused about this. Cause when I'm wide open throttle its at 4.63 in that area.

You did it correct.

Tap the ground wire and use it to read the voltage and see what you get.

If the ground is bad it will throw a code.

Cool, I thought I did But I'm a little confused about what you said. Do you mean to tap the ground wire with the red wire off my multimeter? Would the voltage still read the same with the ground wire tapped?

No instead of putting the black probe on a battery ground or engine ground , use the ground to the tps to ground the volt meter .

Im guessing you have a red wire that is reference , a green wire that is signal, and a black wire that is ground.

Probe the signal with the red and the ground with the black probe.

Hmmmm well maybe someone has already swapped wires on my gt then. Cause I just went out there to look at the wires so from top to bottom here is what I have. Top wire is brown and white, middle wire is gray white, bottom wire is red white. I have been tapping the gray and white wire with the red probe from my multimeter. Whenever I probe the other brown wire I just get 0.00 and the red I always get 0.02. Do you think my wires have already been switched by the previous owner? Or am I just tapping the wrong wires. Which would be the ground wire on mine the brown and white maybe?

Im just guessing at wire colors really because its an 04 and may be different,

The wire that sees no voltage is likely ground, the one that reads .02 tells me something is not correct.

You should get around 4.5 to 5 volts reference from the pcm at all times with the key on. The other wire is the signal or return wire that feeds back to the pcm should start at around .98v and sweep up to around 4.5 to 5v.

Okay well I will go and put the multimeter back on all the wires tomorrow and see what I come up again just to be safe. You think maybe one of my wires has a short on or something to cause that to be like that maybe?

Okay well I Think I may have found my problem. Well when I was probing a bolt on the TB I was getting .98 with key on the on position well today when I went and checked the wires just like you said and here is what I got totally different readings. Here are the wires I probed, I put the red probe from the multimeter to the gray and white wire and I put the black probe from the multimeter on the brown and white wire and the reading from the multimeter was -4.03. Now when I probed the the other wires here is what i got as well I left the black probe on the same wire and and just moved the red probe to the red and white wire and here is what I got -4.97 so I would take it this is causing all my problems and why I am dumping so much fuel correct? My friend also put his scan tool on it and it said the tps was reading 19% at idle this cant be good right cause I thought it was suppose to be around 4% I could be wrong.

The TPS on the EECV Mustang GTs is not adjustable and as such does not need to be adjusted--more about that here.

Its output, between the gray/white (+ meter lead) and gray/red (- lead) wires with the key on and engine off should follow the tracks in these charts as you open and close the throttle:

The voltage should rise and fall evenly with no drop-outs or spikes. You should also disconnect the battery for 5-7 minutes to clear the KAM and force the PCM to learn new idle air and fuel trims, as well as all other adaptively learned values.

I have cleared the KAM twice already and still same thing here is what is going on. Okay when I take off in 1st gear car will stutter till it hits about 2000 rpm and then it will pop and the car comes alive and I get all my power. I'm currently at a lose here the car is eating fuel like crazy now as well. It's also running rich as well if that helps any
