Possible Rear-End Whine?
Within the last two or so weeks, i think i have detected some sort of whine coming from somewhere on my vehicle (99GT 5sp, 4.10's with mech. install)
the sound is most noticable in 5th gear around 2K,,
its not a constant whine like a high pitched one, i have NO idea how to describe it, but its very noticable w/o the radio on while im holding constant and sometimes while the car is decelerating 'still in gear'. when i let the shifter into nuetral i dont notice it nearly as evident
{my best description would be a whirring sound that changes pitch very quickly and ever so slightly}
does this sound like a rear end problem to anyone ?
the mechanic who did the rear end job did a good job with the install as far as i know, have had them for at least 3-4K miles with no prior problems
(also, the car has been relatively jerky under slight acceleration and deceleration in gear occaisionally, though not all the time. are these related? i have had IAC problems recently as well, but this wouldnt affect acceleartion as far as i know would it?)
thanks guys

It's no big deal at all. If your new 4.10s are only whining a little bit in 5th gear it's just fine. If it's really annoying you, take your car in and have the mechanic who did it check for metal shavings in your gear lube (when your new gears don't mesh well). If you're only hearing a little whine in 5th the gears are fine. It's just normal for 4.10s, the mechanic just didn't shim perfectly which is understandable.

Yeah, ive heard that if their not shimmed perfect that they will whine a little bit. Also if you have FRPP gears there is less shimming to do therefore they are supposed to set up alot better and easier and really shouldnt be any whine at all.

RE: Possible Rear-End Whine?
the mechanic had me bring the car back in after 200 miles to change out the fluid and get all teh shavings out, which makes me think he did a great job,
since it was all done free of charge except for the fluid
but its not a sound that ive heard before, it just started a couple weeks ago
can the ring and pinion get damaged in any way that woudl cause this whirring sound, or to cause the car to accelerate poorly and roughly?

Check out your u joints. Its also good to have an aluminum driveshaft as well after a gear swap. Much lighter. I had to replace my whole driveshaft with u joints (on a different car) because of a whirring/ whining sound. From then on it was quiet.

Yup, could be u-joints too, good point.
Also, some gear whine is okay, some gears are cut differently and it's normal to hear a really high pitched whine. My 4.10's & 4.30's both whined, put 30,000 miles on her with the 4.10's/4.30's and never had a failure.
