Default SCT Tuner Question

I am considering buying an SCT Tuner. I did some reading up on it and it is my understanding that you get free lifetime tuning maps as you change things or vehicles (as long as the tuner supports that vehicle).

Modifications on my car: 4.10 gears, X-pipe, no cats, MagnaFlow exhaust, CAI (want to go back to stock air intake).

My question are:

1. Can I recalibrate my speedometer for different gear ratios myself with just plugging in the tuner and using the menu or is that part of a new custom map under the free updates?

2. Is there a noticeable gain with just using the 87 octane tune?

I like to hear from someone who actually uses the SCT.

Thanks for any input!

You can plug and play straight out of the package and set your gear ratio to correct speedometer and odometer.

You will notice a small gain with the 87 tune, but from personal experience neither BAMA or SCT factory tunes are safe. For maximum potential buy the programmer and send the extra $200 on a good tune from Jon Lund @ Lund Racing or Eric Brooks @ Brooks Performance.

Canned tunes are kind of dangerous, but Lund and Brooks have the experience BAMA doesn't have. Others will tell you different, but this is my opinion from personal experience.

Thanks for your input.

I've been reading what I can find on the subject; nobody ever complained about Bama or SCT (I think Bama is affiliated with AmericanMuscle??). I also noticed that AMChriseRose from AM replies a lot with advise, seems like good customer service to me that you get an answer when you have a problem.

i have a sct tuner for my 99 gt i love it i have 3.73 gears that were in the car when i bought it and it was able to correct my speedo. i would recomend getting a shop with experiance to write you a tune or 2 for the car over going with the stock programs and adjustments that you can make with the tuner yourself just my personal opinion and is what i will be doing when i get my motor back to gether this spring with my new upgrades just so i know i get the most out of them. as for gains from the 87 octane program i'm not really sure i never run anything less than 93 in my baby but i don't driver her on the daily either so yea anyways hope that helps ya some

How do you correct the speedo? Either my SCT is locked from certain things or I'm not looking in the right places.

I bought an SCT from Justin at VMP Tuning when I did my engine swap and he did an awesome job with my tunes.
Great guy to work with as well!

Bama is the same type of semi custom tune as Lund. Never heard of any of them being "unsafe". Yes Lund does push the envelope harder (further) thus "maximum potential".

Most mail order tunes are safe for cars with simple bolt ons but past that your not gonna supercharge or cam a car and expect a safe mail order tune.
