99-00 Mustang 4.6 rebuild kit
Hi all,
Just got a junkyard 2000 Mustang 4.6 longblock to build for Christmas.
I currently have a 2000 Mustang GT with 180k miles as my DD.
This gives me the ability to build a motor and not lose my wheels!
First things first. I am looking for a lower end rebuild kit. I don't have money for forged or stroker kits. I'm just looking for a rebuild kit and new pistons. I will reuse the stock crank and beams. My question is, i have been searching for hours for a rebuild kit. I read an article that said the main bearings were different between the Romeo's and Windsor's. If that be the case 100% of the rebuild kits i've seen will not work. Can someone shed some light on which rebuild kits are compatible with the 99-00 Mustang GT 4.6 281 Windsor engine?
Thanks,
Austin V

It is kind of a PITA getting stock rebuild kits from summit or jegs since their online ordering system will give you about a billion results.
I would recommend taking the engine to a machine shop (disassembled) first so that you can be certain you get the right parts. You never know if you're gonna need some oversize pistons or bearings until everything is measured out and rebuilding a junkyard motor without having the block cleaned up is asking for trouble. After that you can have them order everything through their supplier for you.
Not only do you get to support the little guy but you can be sure you get the right parts. Or if they can't match the prices at least use their catalogs to get the proper part numbers.

Stevo,
Thanks for the info. Yes I am going to pull it all apart and take it to be bored .020 over and have it line bored as well. I think I was able to find some info on the main bearings after some searching. It appears they are in fact different. There are three types. One each for aluminum, WAP and Romeo.
