My son's 96 gt 4.6 does not want to upshift until high rpms. it will shift if you let off of the accelerator though. This is a high-mileage car we recently purchased so i do not know the cars service history. i have done a little research and know there are issues with the shift solenoids. Can someone tell me heo to diagnose the problem or at least point me in a direction to go?

Hi, what are you calling high RPM ? The tranny will shift on different cycle depend on how you are driving. My car has 170k on it with the original tranny. From the day i brought it new in 02, the tranny has always driven with different cycle. Get yourself a Ford service manual. It will giving you the info you are seeking about the shift pattern for your car.
