Default Need help / advice: Lost only key + remote

Daughter's '96 has been sitting in the driveway for months now because we have lost the only key. That would be bad enough, but it get's worse...

On that keyring was the only REMOTE for the car, and the car has the dealer installed "600" security system. I had previously bought two new remotes off eBay, but neither would work when following online instructions to add the remote to the system.

So now we have a car with no key, and no way to turn off the security system even if we have a new key cut. I suppose this is my questions:

1. How do I remove the 600 "add-on" security system so that the car can be started?
2. How do I change out the ignition switch (eBay? salvage yard?) and get that working if the keys have chips?

Thanks for your help...

I'm not sure about the security system.

But since your keys have chips you're going to have to get them programmed by a locksmith or a dealer.

I found fairly simple programming steps for adding a duplicate key, but we don't have that option. I wonder if the programming steps work when you replace the entire ignition switch assembly...???

I'm really not sure, but my educated guess would be no.

I say that because I once had to replace the gauge cluster in my car, I bought one off Ebay and even swapping the gauge cluster the the car wouldn't let me start it, I imagine the ignition switch might be the same story.

But I really have no clue, If you have nothing to lose might as well give it a shot!

Call a Ford dealer service dept and they should be able to tell you what you have to do.

Your best option is have a mobile locksmith come out to your place, cut and program 2 new keys. If you are a AAA member you can likely get some $$ back after you turn in the.reciept from.the.locksmith service.

Not sure what to tell ya about the alarm/keyless entry system. As of right now though if the car has been parked for months and it was armed or whatever when it was originally parked, then it is highly likely you have a dead battery and when you give it power again it will likely not be armed anymore.

Assuming the locksmith thing works out and you get it started, run it down to a local car audio shop and they should be able to either program the new remote or sell you a working one.

Is there a way to just put a non-chipped ignition in the car and just forget ALL of this mess? (probably not, just asking)
