Default Should you have less offset with wider wheels?

I'm looking at some 9x17 wheels for the back of my stang, and I was wondering if I need to keep the same offset as the 8 inch wide wheels? I can get 9 inch wheels with the regular 30mm offset, or 25mm, which would seem to give a little more clearance on the back side of the wheel, if that is desirable. Does it matter? thanks in advance for your help!

IIRC, cobras ran a 17x9(275 tire) wheel from the factory and a 275 is usually recommended to be mounted on a 9" wheel. You shouldn't need any special offset unless you go bigger than that. American Muscle has a set of 17x9's that fit with a 30mm offset. I think you will be fine with the normal offset unless you decide to go bigger than a 9" wide wheel. I don't think you have to worry about offset unless you go up to a 305/315 tire.

Hey,

With a 9" wide wheel, the offset usually does not make a big difference. The wheels with a smaller offset are designed to sit a bit farther out. By sitting farther out you can put larger tires on the car, and in many peoples opinion it looks more aggressive.

If you are putting a large tire on the car, such as something over a 305mm, you will want to go with a lower offset. The only other reason this would be desirable would be for overall looks. Other than this it really does not make a difference what offset you run with.

I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, feel free to get back touch. Good luck!

I already have the Nitto 275's on my 17x8's, and that's not just cutting it any more. I want to go 305 or 315's, but I want to make sure it won't rub on the inside.

if your buying wheels and want a 315 tire then buy a 17x10 or 17x10.5 with about a 28mm offset

Food for thought, I don't know if it is the look you are going for or traction but maybe a more aggressive tire? You could put a staggered tire package from AM on your car and be happy with the look but if you were to autocross it or race it a smaller but stickier tire will beat you every time.

Put the NT01 on it or RS3's, NT05's, Rival's. Something between 100 and 200 tread wear rating, I was amazed at the grip I picked up when I went from a 300 tread wear tire (HTR Z II's) to a 140 (old RS3's). Just a night and day difference.

The set up I want next is the NT05 with a staggered 275/315 fitment. But that is due to SOLO rules in my class.

I do want more traction, the wheelspin since I got my tuner is getting ridiculous, but not really sticky tires. I want to keep my Nitto 555 tires because the tread life is good with the harder compound. I've already got 275's in front and back, I just want to go a little wider in back, both for looks, and to get a little more grip off the line. I don't do much racing, just a little stop light tire testing for my own amusement.
