300hp

Just got my first mustang this week and I'm already looking to add a little hp to it. It's got plenty of power, but I'd like to reach the 300hp mark. I like nice round numbers. Brace yourself so the awesomeness of the total lack of knowledge of cars I have, doesn't knock you over.

What's the difference between regular mufflers and a catback system? I'm looking to get regular flowmasters as I want it breath better, but not get real loud. Or would a catback system give better performance?

Also looking at getting a cold air intake. What other simple mods should I look into to get me to 300hp? I'd kinda like to do them myself if I could. If nothing else simple comes to mind, how about moderately easy.

With the 2 mods I mentioned, how close to 300 could I get? My Mustang is a 2004 GT, 5 speed, with the anniversary package.

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for the advice.

you can up your crank power from 260 - 300 easy with intake exhaust and other little bolt ons, like TB intake plenum pulleys etc, but to hit 300 to the wheels, you'd need cams, and maybe a good P&P job, and a good tune.

The ford website says my car generates 260hp. Are they talking at the crank or at the tires? If they're talking at the crank, then i'm just looking to get 300 at the crank, and then later on once I gain more knowledge of my car and working on it, I'll worry about at the tires and modifying the internals.

just basic bolt on mods and a good tune like above suggested should be enough, with a set of gears, your mustang will go from a tame daily driver to a street terror. hondas beware.

Shade04, they are talking about at the crank. I had a 2003 gt untilabout two weeks ago with Flowmasters($200), Steeda underdrive pulleys(about $169), Roush Cold Air Intake(139.00), and 70mm throttle body(179). On a dyno, this setup produced 255 rwhp... Many people didn't believe it when I told them I only had veryminor bolt onmods. Most cars lose anywere from 15%-18% of the crank power while delivering it to the rear wheels. So, take 300 and multiply it by .15(which means 15%). You get 45. Now take that 45 horses thats lost from the crank and subtract it from the 300 horses you want at the motor, and its 255 at the wheels. So,do yourbolt ons, go to a dyno, look for 255-260, and when you see thosenumbers at the rear wheels, you have a 300 horsepower gt.Thats really all it takes. But a plenum along with the throttle body, and a bigger mass air flow will lock down your goal of hitting 300 at the crank for sure.. Good luck!

Either way you want to do it...

You'll have close to 300hp. You might need some under drive pullies and a computer chip to help you. A cat back system is. All new pipes and mufflers from theend of the H pipe to your tail pipes. It's alot easier to replace to buy a cat- back kit. Instead of just the mufflers. Then you can just take the bolts off the h pipe, and throw everything up. Instead of cuttin the mufflers out and all that fun stuff. If you want flowmasters, but don't want them too loud go with a three chamber muffler. And they got a cat-back set with the three chamber mufflers. I personaly like the two chambers better, they sound good.

Okay bro, if you want 300hp at the crank that won't be hard at all, but if you want it to the wheels, you are going to have to invest in say ALL THE BOLT ONS AVAILABLE! You have 260hp at the crank, take 15% off to get ur rwhp if you drive manual, & 20% if you drive an auto. Then get a dyno to find out EXACTLY where you are.

Also, forget about a cold air intake, & get a mass air meter [C&L, or Pro-M]. CAI are crap.

In order to get the most from your exhaust you want a straight through system in order to harness ALL OF THE HP from your system. That means you need a good set of long tube headers, or mid-lengths...screw shorties, an X-PIPE [Dr. Gas, Bassani, or Magnaflow], & a straight through cat-back like Magnaflow, Bassani, or Dynomax. The Flows will give you sound, but that's about it. They are down an average of 8-9hpcompared toMagnas. Now, you have to decide what's important to you...sound, performance, or both.

Once you have a mass air setup, get a t/b, an upper intake plenum, a set of underdrive pulleys, NGK iridium plugs, 2 MSD DIS 4's or a Plasma Booster (this mod is debatable on it's benefits), get a complete exhaust system...don't forget your 4.10 gear, an aluminum drive shaft, & a set of Nitto TR-55R's. Then go back to where you had your first dyno, do a couple more pulls & get a custom chip for you car, & some full length subframe connectors welded on. If you've not hit 300rwhp by then...& don't be surprised if you are still a few rwhp down...look into getting a Comp, or VT MILD street CAM. Hitting 300RWHP is not easy, orcheapIF YOU ARE DOING IT ALL MOTOR. You could always get a blower, or N2O, but if you get a blower, you are going to be dropping more money than everything I've named so far.

Want RWHP...gotta PAY!! Good luck w/everything

BTW...also, get a Pro 5.0 short shifter...they are bad@$$
