Default 2000 4.6 w to 2004 4.6 Romeo

Ok guys could use some info here . I swapped the 2000 4.6 that was puffed to a 2004 4.6 from a van that had 40,000 the only prob I had was the sensor in the freeze plug by the oil filter . I removed it from the 2000 model and thought it would be a easy swap but no go she would not fit the cylinder walls were too close ( yup tried two). Is this the temp gauge sensor or ?? Is there a solution for this that you may know ? Other wise the thing runs great thanks guys
