Battery Drain, Wiring Short, Dead Battery
Maybe this should be a STICKY? I hope this helps someone out there.
This Tech Advice assumes: Battery Drain overnight, Good Battery, Good Alternator.
My wife just bought a 1999 Mustang Anniversary Convertible from some joker on Craig's List, the PO did not disclose the Electrical Issues with the car. I don't like Ford Mustangs, cringed when the wife brought the Ford thing home with issues, fortunately I'm sort of a guru fixing anything auto.
Having searched this Forum with all Battery Drain, Battery loss of voltage, depleted battery's etc.. I thought it would be prudent to sign in and post here for one time only with the hope that some one is helped.
Some Battery Drain issues list the GEM Module to be the issue. Check this simple bit of wiring first before suspecting something major or tearing your new FM/CD Player and Dash out first.
To the point: 1999 Mustang Convertible, Spanking New Battery, Alternator Tests Good Strong Voltage Out, Car Sits over night, DEAD New Battery. Frustrating Right?
Well upon a quick inspection, appears the "Spinal Chord" of wires located at the Left Corner on Floor Board just below and left of the Brake Pedal under the Carpet have some pretty bad factory insulation. There are aprox 12 to 14 total, 14-16 Gage wires. In our case, 2 of the wires has insulation that had 'worn' 'frayed' off and were making contact with the steel floor board or the other wire, thus draining the battery in 'short order' (nearly as fast as I could charge the battery)
