Gas Millage Problem??
#11
You want to know the one thing that I see on every gas mileage thread, on every car forum that I visit? People vastly overrating the MPG of their car. It's inevitable and when you call them out on it, it's always some super secrete formula of proper maintenance and fairy farts.
Regardless of what these people will say, you will never see 4 cylinder levels of gas mileage on a V8. Check fuelly.com for the actual mpg's of any car. The 4.6L mustangs get roughly 20MPG average, which is exactly what I got in all 6 of mine. All of mine were properly maintained, with proper tire pressure, and ranging from stock to full bolt on.
From what you're saying, you have a lead foot, so that is the reason you have such craptastic gas mileage. Got to pay to play.

I haven't used Fuelly in years, forgot all about it. Once my Stang comes back from Ford I will track mine with it. I just use the phone calculator every time I fill up, easier than keeping receipts.
Keep in mind everybody also has different driving styles and locations. I am in Florida, all flat roads low elevation and since I am still learning the car I haven't shifted over 2500 except for a few occasions. When I leave my house it's a 65 MPH zone and I can just stay in fifth all the way to work which is roughly 30 miles. In town I just toss it in neutral and roll to the light, usually I can time the lights so I only have to stop once or twice. Not sure if the overrating comment was directed towards me or not but I am explaining myself regardless. I also just learned I have 3.27 gears so that helps a lot too.
Not trying to attack or anything, just explaining myself.

Wasn't really directed at you, just people in general, I've seen claims of 33mpg average in an LS1 Fbody. I was skeptical about the 70/30 city and getting 23mpg, but from what you're describing, it's mostly highway and the city is very little stop and go. I would buy that, I got 23 on a 1000 mile pure highway trip.

I would fill the tank and drive to and back ..next morning fill the tank again and do this everyday for 4 days.. always took about the same amount which was 4.1 to .2 gallons to top the tank off and the mileage one way was 41 miles..
I have an auto with 4:56 gears and I set the rpm at around 2550 @ 65mph and it will still get 20 mpg if I don't heavy foot and leave it alone.
