metal pieces in tranny
I switched my tranny fluid to synchromesh today, and when i pulled the drain plug, i stuck my finger in the hole and was able to pull out some little chunks of what appear to be gear pieces. i stuck my finger further in, and there was some more i could not get a grip on. if my gears are happening to be missing chunks, is it still possible to get a rebuild, or is it new tranny time?

RE: metal pieces in tranny
Go to a TRUSTED tranny shop, not Aamco, not Transgo, and definately not the dealer. At least not yet.You can use something to flush the mystery metal out by removing the fill plug or shifter and pouring some cheap trans fluid in and catching what comes out of the drain hole.(I don't know if you could use kerosene or diesel fuel or something really light because of the seals). You could also try a magnet on a flexible rod to drag steel peices out. There is going to be some material that's normal, but the bigger the peices the more serious the trouble.Take the peices to the affore mentioned TRUSTED tranny shop and see what they say.If you still have any warranty left (you don't say what year car) take the peices and the info from the tranny shop to the dealer and see what you can get.Small unidentifyable peices are not to much to worry about.Larger chunks that are obviously teeth, dogs,or forks need attention.
