Default 1999 GT surges from stop

I have a 1999 GT 4.6L automatic. When I am starting off either in drive or reverse, sometimes as soon as I put it in gear the car surges with a pretty good force. I know now to have my foot firmly on the brake before I put it in gear. I am afraid though, that someone else driving my car may not do the same if I forget to tell them and they might run into something. What could be the cause of the surging? I don't touch the accelerator when starting so it can't be a sticky pedal.

Thanks.

What rpm is your car idling at? Sounds like you have more of a high idle problem. maybe a vacuum leak.

That's too high, it should be around 700-800. Likely have a vacuum leak or your IAC is dirty and needs cleaning.
