Default I need a very simple exhaust explanation...

Okay so I'm pretty good with cars but I've always been confused with exhaust systems so I'd like someone to explain this to me even though it's probably a stupid question.... Also I drive a 2001 Mustang GT. So what are cats? What is a catback exhaust system vs I guess a normal exhaust? And does an O/R X-pipe eliminate the cats, resulting in more sound? Lastly, are resonators and mufflers the same thing or does the resonator come right after the cats? Thanks guys!

cats = catalytic converter, to reduce emissions.
catback exhaust system = exhaust system from behind the cat, leaves the converter in place, replaces muffler(s) and tailpipe(s).
x and h pipes, easier to just google it.
resonator normally behind muffler, helps to reduce certain sound waves.
