Default Cigarette lighters

OK, well I know they are officially 12V power outlets but I was wondering if anybody uses theirs as a cigarette lighter.

I have a really bitching cigarette lighter out of an old Lincoln and it looks a lot better than the 12v rubber plug but it doesn't get hot.

I plug it into my 67 fastback and it works just fine. Why won't the new socket heat up the old element?

There are differences in the socket. Can't tell you what they are as I've never looked close enough, but as you discovered that it doesn't work in the 12V outlet I guess confirms there is a difference. Theoretically you could get a cigarette lighter receptacle and swap it in place of the power point outlet.

I really don't want to cut my harness up to make it work. I was hoping somebody had an easy hack but if not, I'll just keep the Lincoln lighter in there as eye candy instead of the factory provided rubber butt plug.

Not really much to cut, it's just two wires. Save an inch or two of wire off the little clip that goes on the power point in case you want to splice it back in someday. "+" goes on to the center terminal and "-" to the outside, pretty much impossible to screw it up. Just sayin...

Well, I figured it out. In the interest of educating the masses while running the risk of looking like a mowron...

There is no difference between the two sockets. The trick is to use a cigarette lighter that still works. DOH!

I have tried all of the different lighters that I have scrounged from bone yards over the years but none worked until I tried the one that I most recently snagged. It works like a champ and can light a stogie in a hurricane.
