Default almost fixed - temp gauge and starter

Car is 1997 Ford Mustang SVT with 115K + miles on it and lots of little and a few bigger repairs were needed when I got it two years ago...time is limited with 3 kids but I think I am nearly finished

For starters...no pun....I am convinced the starter is shot, it will start cold, but after heat and a few other starts, it is done. From my past starter experience it sounds like this is the issue. Battery is new and tested, alternator is fine.
Question: What cars can I pull a 1997 v8 4.6 starter? F150? Crown Vic? Is there a cross reference table for this? I would rather put in a used ford starter for $20 than some low end new off ebay. Plus I get a credit at the junk yard. I have yet to find a very good DIY for this starter, outside of people saying they left the top bolts out.

Also, can I use a temp gauge from a v8 mustang and swap the part in the instrument cluster, they looks the same, but there was a resistor in the Cobra, not in the v8 mustang in the junk yard. does the indicator pop off? I need to switch the color back paper.

Thanks for your help
