Default Leaking Rear Differential

Let's just start off this thread with the truth.

I ****ed up.

I used the rear differential to jack my car up and ended up bending the rear differential cover and fluid is slowly leaking out. This isn't all bad, because I should replace that POS aluminum cover with something more sturdy and I'm installing 4.10 gears anyway. What I am wondering is if the cover is just allowing the fluid to leak? Or is it the pinion seal as well? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

It should be just the cover.
It should be obvious where the leak is originating.
I think that the oem cover is steel.

hey man... you could have f***ed up even more. That funny differential noise i had turned into a destroyed rear end the other day!
Anyways- as camster said, it should just be the cover. you would have to really screw up to damage your pinion seal with a jack on the differential. Really easy to see as well, look where the driveline goes into the differential. If its leaking, it needs replacing.

this

those fancy girdle type covers wont keep your rear from exploding any faster or slower.

find a stock one for a couple bucks and slap it on there when you do gears. Also, throw away that stupid paper gasket they give you for the cover, and use a nice solid bead of RTV

I bought a girdle style cover for mine when I had the 3.73's installed. I like the convenience of having a drain plug.
