There's always eBay, but then you have to deal with shipping, too. I would stick with local searches. Have you tried car-part.com? Salvage yard transmissions typically range anywhere from $250-$750, but without the ability to bench-test, it could be a real crapshoot. There's not much to go on, except the seller's word and the mileage of the car that it came out of. You could check the fluid too, but they might not let you pull the pan to check for debris.

Whether you rebuild or replace, be extra careful to make sure that you flush the cooler lines before another one goes in. You don't want any debris to contaminate another transmission.

Yeah, I am was thinking the same thing about the lines. It doesn't really look like anything really got totally destroyed I never saw any metal flakes just a few small pieces that look like the tabs on the friction disks. Yeah, I'll have to take a look at car-part a few others have mentioned it.

If you do swap an automatic to a manual will need to swap the ecu as well.

If you'er considering a used one pull the dip stick out and take a big whiff you can't mistake burnt transmission fluid, even if they changed the fluid you will be able to tell.

Find a tech or trade school near you Buy a rebuild kit and see if they will rebuild it

Yeah, I'm on the hunt for a good used one and have a few outlooks for rebuilding my original or the one that is in the car now. Not really fun at all.

Update! I got a rebuilt trans from a 03 for a really good price. Now I have the fun of getting all the electronics swapped and figuring out how to get the speed sensor to talk to the car. Anybody done this before?

i think and you will have to verify but you may be able to swap the tail shaft housing and shaft, that' where the VSS goes on a 4R70W.

If not, not sure what you can do the 96 -98 has a two wire system and makes it's own voltage.

An 03 has a three wire system voltage/ground/signal

Yeah, I was thinking that swapping the tail shaft was the way to go. They do have speed calibrators that are on option too.

I have a Dallas Speedcalc in mine because i installed 373's, only way i could adjust my speedometer.

i'm not sure that would be a solution, all the settings on a speedcalc are based on rear end gear ratios
