1998 GT speedometer not working
I searched and couldnt find an answer to my specific problem.
The speedometer has been giving me issues for a while, it would read +/- what I was actually doing. A slap on top of the dash would correct it. The odometer recently went out, I replaced the gears and put the cluster back in. Now the trip and odometer work fine but the speedometer does not work at all.
Everything I found in my search said the speedometer and odometer were not working. I couldn't find speedometer not working but odometer working. My guess would be that I need a new speedometer motor but I can't find any online and I would like my mileage to be correct.

Going by the mention of how giving a smack to the dash would temporarily bring it back to life, it is most likely the stepper motor in the cluster.
What I would do just to be sure though is plug a tuner or other device that allows you to view pcm data into the OBD port, see what the pcm "thinks" vehicle speed is. If the pcm gives a "0 mph" or whatever reading then the issue would be the speed sensor on the trans; likewise if the pcm has a correct reading of speed then that confirms the issue is in the cluster.
Regarding the stepper motor, I am not sure where or if you can get a replacement. What I would try first is just buying a used cluster on Ebay or your local junkyard and either harvest the parts you need from it or swap out the entire cluster. As to how easy or difficult it is to take apart a cluster and remove parts, can't help ya there. Might be a Youtube vid on it somewhere that could give you a little direction though.
