Default Reuilding an 8.8 rear end

I have an 02 GT and I'm looking to rebuilt it with 3.73 or 4.10 gears. I can't use my housing due to the driver side axle tube being trashed, so can I use any ford 8.8 read end or does it have to be a mustang?

Needs to be from a 99-04 gt to be a direct replacement

94-98 gt/cobra will work, but be slightly shorter so the wheels will tuck, and a rear from a foxbody will be shorter and not have the brackets for disc brakes.

any v6 will have a 7.5 rear so dont buy one of them, it will drop in but not survive the power very long

Ok thanks for the info. Someone told me I could use any Ford 8.8 axle like the one from the F-150.

you are referring to the housing itself correct? Not the actual differential?

housing is this WHOLE unit

differential would be just this

You can swap an 8.8 differential from any ford into basically any 8.8 housing. Only differences would be axle splines on the spider gears and whether or not it is a posi unit

you can not simply slap a housing from a f150 into a mustang

Oh ok thanks for the clarification. I don't plan on changing the LSD or anything, just the gears.

I was thinking that I could save money by using any empty housing and just swap the good parts from mine into it.

Who sells an empty housing?? It will a complete unit from a junker.Beyond that, you'd be paying someone to strip it down, and adding to the expense, not cutting it.Not a horrible job to do a gear change, but if you have a damaged tube,I think that you have a lot of work ahead of you.
