2002 mustang GT. Hearing a very loud popping noise coming from left wheel. Also thick black grease is slung around fender well and inner wheel. Happens when going straight and even turning. Any ideas?

Ball joint. You need to lift it up and pull the wheel off and take a look though. What you will find will probably outdo any guesses we can provide.

Don't know if it is a front or rear wheel. In any case, I like Z28KLRs diagnosis. Being "old school," I would also replace your grease seals if you have to go deeper into the front suspension, and, axle seals if the problem is in the rear.

Good catch, for some reason I thought it was mentioned that it was the front. Ball joint is obviously non applicable to the rear, so let's hope he doesn't go looking for one there.

I'm thinkin the problem should be at least somewhat obvious upon wheel removal and inspection. OP, feel free to throw up a couple pics of the carnage.

If the grease is flung around the fender well its probably a bad wheel bearing.
