rear axel seals and bearings
Hello,
96 GT . Both axel seals where leaking. Pulled out the shafts tonight. Some people say use a claw hammer to remove seals and use a 1 5/8 inch socket to set the bearing in axel ? And a block of wood or old bearing for seal ? I don't know ? That's why I'm asking ? I'm assuming I have to rent a puller or slide hammer to remove bearing ? Thanks. Walt

I can't verify the socket size, but the rest sounds about right. Except for the part about using an old bearing to drive the new seals in. You can use the old bearing to drive the new bearings in, but I wouldn't use it on your new seals. A block of wood will work better for that. And yeah you'll need a slide hammer to pull the old bearings out.

if the bearings are not bad, and there isnt excessive wear on the axle shaft, dont touch the bearings, use a decent length pry bar to just pop the seals out and a small piece of 2x4 to knock the new seal in
