*PLEASE READ ASAP* How to tell if I bought a Non-PI engine or PI-engine?

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forums and I need some help. I recently bought a replacement 4.6 2V for my 2003 Mustang GT after the first one blew up. I bought it online from a place that always sells engines and it does have a 3-year warranty. It was supposed to be a 03 drop-out with 73K miles. However, I don't think it's a PI engine. I think it's NPI and am having a hard time spotting all the differences. I am currently away from the engine (in college) but it was just received at my buddies shop back home and he sent me some pics. I am going to have him go back and take some more, including the casting numbers on the back.

If this thing is NPI, I'm going to be EXTREMELY pissed off and raise hell to the company I bought it from and have to play the waiting game again..=

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it!

Be ready to start getting mad, cause Im pretty sure looking at that intake its a NPI.

Looks can be deceiving, however visually, it looks like a PI engine because of the individual coil packs. The intake looks like an early PI intake before they changed to the aluminum crossover. But the oil filler tube is on the left side at a 45 deg angle, which is indicative to a NPI engine. The easiest way to tell if you have PI heads or not is to pull the intake and look at the intake port. NPI ports are more a circle with a small divet cut out for the injector. Looks kinda like a teardrop. The PI port is more of a rounded square.

Agree with Kaos. Individual coil packs are a giveaway. Intake may be an older plastic PI intake, but based on ignition, I would tend towards a PI engine with original plastic PI intake. Pulling the intake will confirm the heads - which I would do to replace with the Ford Performance racing intake before installation.
