intermittent tranny noise
Hello all~
I have a 97 GT here. 5 speed manual. Occasionally when I'm in 3rd gear just cruisin with moderate throttle, I hear this rapid clicking coming from the tranny. It doesn't ever fall out though. I give the shift lever a little pressure and it goes away. What do I need? Is that a synchro or a worn gear?
I am planning on rebuilding the tranny come spring with all new synchros, should I invest in a 3rd gear?
I don't want to get responses on what transmissions to buy. I'm trying to keep cost low AND learn how to do a manual tranny. Taking auto courses too. Learn and save...
THanks all

RE: intermittent tranny noise
It may not be your tranny at all, I had the same sound with my stang a 98 and 57k on it replaced my shifter with my tri-ax and it went away. Otherwise I would say that it is your tranny itself. the t-45 was not a great tranny to start with, there are some beef up kits though.

oh really? I don't plan on doing very extensive mods to the car, and don't want to get a different one if I don't have to. Do you know of a website where I can read up on the beef up kit? I found a good rebuild kit on ebay for $120 to my door, that has kevlar/carbon synchronizers. Let me know where I could get the kit
thanks

RE: intermittent tranny noise
I saw a complete rebuid for the t-45 in one of my MM&FF mags and it looked good for street rebuild but definatedly for an advanced tranny man. the shifter is easy install just make sure you have the gaskets or save the old ones. sometimes the play in the stock shifter because of the rubber gromments at the base of the shifter don't allow the gear to completely engage, even though the synchro may be in good shape

well I plan to do the rebuild myself, and I'm pretty inclined. Done a lot of work otherwise. I'm gonna get all the books on the trans and take the tranny to my basement and rebuild it with some gearhead buddies. We'll just follow the book. I plan on doing this stuff for a living some day so I wanna start just jumpin into big projects and teachin myself as much as I can.

I'll look but I dunno what I'll come up with. Right now I need to get me a better paying more hours-per-week job so I can afford at least the flubbin parts for this stuff. Word to the wise, never work for Sears. great store but crappy management... ::sigh::
I have a few independent shops that I trust with my car that I plan on applying at..
one I get some steady cash flow the fun can begin..
