Default Thermostats

What are the scoops on thermostats? Do they help out? Is it worth the $20 to swap 'em?

180 degree t-stat some say will land you a couple horsepower... 2-3. Worth it to keep the engine a little cooler if you're going with nitrous or a blower. I've been told this will hurt gas mileage but I'm not sure. The 193 degree t-stat that is in there is designed to get the best gas mileage.

160 degrees will keep the engine in warmup mode at times without any other changes... so it will run rich and kill mileage.

dude, i hope you just answered a problem i've been having with my car since i've gotten it. my car takes 15 miles of driving just to warm up, i was told to get another thermostat. so im guessing i have a 160 in my car now, because it seems like it runs rich and my engine dies sometimes after startup in cold weather.

So if I even wanted to get a t-stat I should run the 180 degree? IDK I probably won't even do the t-stat if it's going to kill my gas milage and air/fuel for only 2-3 horse [:@] Thanks for the help

I never heard that it is going to lower gas mileage. I get about 22 mpg with 3.73's and a 180* thermostat so I do not think that is true.

good thing you reworded it. I was wondering which thermostats had scoops on them. for $20, can you really go wrong?

So the 180* is a good buy then?

And yeah what I meant was what is the scoop on a thermostat...

Yeah I sounded like a dumb ***...

Yea, it keeps my car cooler, with ultimatley gives you more horsepower. It was an easy fix for me to do because I had to change out the radiator anyways so I figured that I might as well.
