I believe if the purge valve is malfunctioning, it has a code of it's own in your cars computer.

I don't see how this could affect your gas mileage. I'd look into O2 sensors first.

i have a 97 gt, and my purge valve went bad. i replaced it and the check engine light went out. the only thing i can think of about gas mileage is the 02 sensors. but there are 4 of them.

True, but that isn't the best way to tell at all. My car isn't running rich & my tail pipes have black soot on them from not being cleaned over the past 2 years it's been on the road.

Best way to clean out black soot (Carbon buildup) is to mix in about 5 gallons of 110 octane and give 'er Hell! Works every time...be able to run your finger around the inside of the pipe and come out clean

As for the problem...I agree with the above posts...check the fuel filter...depending on how many miles you have may be a good time to replace anyway as part of maintenance. Also check the O2 sensors...the two most likely causes. If not, check the diagnostics...could be a computer related problem. The purge valve is really only for releasing line pressure in the fuel rail to change injectors and things of that nature...you would probably be able to check to see if there is anything coming out (gas smell, mist, etc.) There is a little cap valve that looks like a valve stem on the fuel rail. Good luck pinpointing the problem.

I would rule out the fuel filter becasue with a clogged filter, you would be sending less fuel to the engine. The problemhere is too much fuel being burned.

So what kind of gas mileage are we talking about?

I would get a set of gears and tread lighter. IMO

$32 per 100 miles ? that sux.

do you mean a tank full for 100 miles? what were you getting before? it sounds like your getting 10 miles to the gallon or thereabouts.

take it in, if its not running extremely rich then you have a leak. in either case i wouldn't mess with it.
