I have no proof, but I have seen articles in mags that I can't recall. I really don't care if you believe me or not, but if you think about what is going on with your exhaust flow, you'll agree with me.

I do have to backup redass on this. I stock backpresure is better then a bad flow. Plus you need a tune after you removed all the cats. Normally the car should run a little bit richer with less backpressure and leaner with more backpressure. Your car is tuned to the stock exhaust, so the tune will be off after you alter the backpressure. But I have to say I do not know how much a difference just the two cats make.

Exaust
Sorry but we've seen little or no gain on a 4.6 GT.We do know that the Bassani cat back system with X-pipe and no pre-cats makes 15HP. That's as good as it gets. There will be more upcoming tests. The results will appear in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords Magazine. At 14psi, with stock exhaust and cats, we made 507HP. The Bassani is the best we've tested. Cats? I've never seen "high flow" cat(s) ever make any power over a stock cat. A cat will typically burn up 10HP on a 300HP engine. Dual cats lower it to 5HP. Run 600HP through duals (300HP per cat) and you're back to a 10HPdrop.

ya theres something called race pipes. They take the place of the cats.
http://mustangtuning.com/slprapi946mu.html $62 bucks.

rather than spend the 62 bucks on those and then have to worrie about getting them welded to the car i would just buy a cheap mid pipe i think you can get a upr for about 150 and when you put eh lt's on you could sell it and still be out about the same amount of money with less effort.
you dont have to weld them.. you can use exhaust clamps.

Whats everyone talking about ?? Running a straight through exhaust with no cats is an easy gain of ~10 HP...

Yeah, but they are talking about gutting it themselves or having shop do it. Doing that aint gonna give you 10hp, but if you get an o/r midpipe than that might give you 10hp. Just gutting the cats or puting piping in place of them is not gonna give you anything, if you think about it your having the stock crappy what is it like 2" pipe then like a foot of 2 1/2" from replacing it, than back to the stock pipe. All of this = 0 hp gain

YA you could do that foe shure. just take out the system, cut and fab up incerrts and make shure u do it right and it should work. or just spend like $150 and put in an o/r x-pipe.

The easiest way is to just buy an o/r midpipe.

I'm gonna say if you are looking for the cheapest way to do this, and best way, would be to buy an O/R X-Pipe, and then just put the factory H-pipe back on when you go to sell it, and sell the O/R X-Pipe. Probably lose $50, but thats pretty cheap, and it's the best way to guarantee a HP gain. I'm on the fence on wether or not gutting the cats hurts performance, but I would definitelly agree that it won't help.
