pullin tranny! :)
Hello all~
I have a 1997 mustang GT, 5 speed manual. The time to pull the trans and do some work on it and the clutch is drawing nearer and nearer! Oye. Time flies. I want to know what special tools I should get to remove the transmission. I have a great array of basic sockets and wrenches, and will have access to a jack and jack stands (should I put it up on all four?) and my buddy will be supplying a floor transmission jack.
I have the procedure for getting it out pretty down pat in my head, from alldata and a few books here and there. Been reading and studying it, and I put the car on a lift at work to inspect underneath (damn shame i can't use the lift ::sigh: (yes I've asked and cannot use it)
Anyone know of any special tools they needed to get to pull the trans, or anything they had to do that you wouldn't think of, let me know. Will I need to tilt the engine/tranny back a bit?
Thanks all in advance
George

You can pull the trans with the basic tools you have. The only special tool you will need will be the clutch allignment tool when you reinstall the clutch. It will be alot easier to get to the top 2 bolts on the bell housing if you do tilt the engine back (drain the trans fluid first) and the top bolt on the starter can be a pain.

you'll need a few extensions for your socket wrench. I'm not sure how the '96s are but on my '00 i had to pull the midpipe off b4 the trans had room to drop down. Also if you put all four corners on jackstands you'll be much happier.

All I have to say is find every extension you can to reach that top starter bolt. You will have more time in that bolt then anything else. My advice go from the front by the radiator with the ratchet and run along the exhaust manifold and have someone lay on the ground and try to hold the socket on the bolt. That worked pretty good for me. You also do have to unbolt your exhaust

have you ever rebuilt a tranny before? If not, I wouldnt start now, it's not something you try by yourself without someone there that has done a few. If your just pulling it out and putting in another one(used or new) then Im sure you wont have that many issues, it's fairly straight forward. Any way, I bought a used tranny for mine after I blew my last one racing. $500 delivered! You cant hardly beat that. Good luck man and make sure your stands are good and sturdy, dont buy cheap ones. Shake the hell outta that car on the stands before you get under there. Later

About 2 months ago, i pulled my tranny and did a complete rebuild. Installed new clutch too. If you need any info pm me or post and ask. It took me 3 days to do, but thats with me being lazy and working
