It prevents the axle from moving side to side. Its the smae kind of thing that a panhard bar is. Except with a panhard bar your suspension will act differently in left and right turns because of how the panhard bar is mounted. But the watts link is semetrical and behaves the same in either direction. Its not needed with a 4 link, but it is neccesary with a three link rear suspension. Either a watts link or panhard bar that is.

In a stock situation (4 link) the axle can migrate laterally up to 2 1/2". With the Watts installed it will be cut down to 1/2 mm. So it is a nice addition, even if you are not running a 3-Link.
